Progress 12/8

Worked on the paper some more today. I did some research into the opposing views in terms of Separation of Church and State, so that I could make my paper better balanced. It's interesting reading - one side has got a clear constitutional advantage, while the other main support comes from other sources. I'm learning plenty of new stuff - I must admit I didn't know as much as I would have thought I did going into the project. The issue seems quite simple on the exterior, but once you really get into it, it become extremely complex. There are a lot of legal issues that have yet to be resolved. Every time I come across some new info, I'm simply pulling back another layer to this extremely complicated issue. Hopefully I will be able to shed some light on this in my paper, I am already feeling more knowledgeable about it considering my most current research.

Ian-
I really like your topic. I did a paper on this issue Freshman year. I agree that the topic has so many layers, at times it was overwhelming for me because there were so many views on it. It was a subject that I learned a lot about and it sounds like you are as well.

Yay research! I agree with Erin and I also really like your topic. I think it's cool that you picked at topic that ended up being a lot more complicated than you thought. I think that makes writing the expository essay easier, but it probably will make it harder when you have to make it opinionated. I also shared your experience in that I learned a lot I didn't know about the different sides of my issue when I started researching.

As the others put it, I like your topic. It's also a very complicated topic that goes back to the founding of our nation. Although I'm not in your class, I'd like to your take on this.
What kinds of legal issues come up with this topic? I guess I'll have to read your essay to find out.
I too found out more about my subject than I thought I knew. I thought I knew pretty much all of it, but my opinions were actually changed as a result of my findings. Did your findings have any affect on your opinion?

Ian,
I really like your topic, along with everyone else. Your topic sounds like something that is very complicated but I think that it is one that sounds very interesting. It sounds like there will be a lot of different ideas regarding your topic. Good luck!

It looks like you first expected to have a faceoff between a normative argument(there shouldn't be...) and a positive argument (there is...). I don't know if these two types of arguments can clash - they seem to be approaching one issue from totally different levels of cooperative inquiry. Kudos to you, however, for daring to delve into the dark depths of dichomatric (is that a word?) dissertation.

The issue of separation of church in schools is largely decided in today's society, so it will be interesting to see what the opposition has to say to defend it. Also, i would like to ask what you think about private, church affiliated institutions.
And to respond to your comment on my blog, i did not find the particular article you mentioned, but i did find an editorial that mentioned similar research. He hypothesized that video games provide an outlet for that kind of behavior.

Ian I too think this is a good topic that has been a controversial issue for a while now. It sounds like it could be a challenging paper to right but it think that it will challenge you in a good way. I also don't know too much about separation of church and state and would like to read your final paper after you have finished!
